Quotes

"The Facebook generation wears their causes like the way they wear their favorite fashion," says Tom Watson, publisher of onPhilanthropy.com. It's a statement of who they are, he says.
- Newsweek, 2007

"We have the opportunity to get involved (during our 20s) through the Internet, things like Facebook, etc., that the older generation didn't have," said Will Schneider, a young professional who works for New York-based Changing Our World. He leads a new group, FLiP (Future Leaders in Philanthropy), an online networking group for young professionals in the philanthropy world.
- Nonprofit Times, 2007

As the economist Susan Raymond argued in the journal onPhilanthropy in September, “We are beginning to understand that old categories” — commerce, capitalism and philanthropy — “do not serve the new generation of either social problems or market opportunities.”
- The New York Times, 2006

While marketing and causes are not exactly strange bedfellows, the current wave of cause-oriented campaigns reflects a major cultural shift in the mind-set of Americans, especially Baby Boomers, maintained Tom Watson, chief strategic officer for Changing Our World Inc., a consultant specializing in philanthropy and the publisher of online title onPhilanthropy. "You can't turn around without seeing a big new campaign, a magazine cover, big media coverage or financial sector ads targeting Boomers' desires to do good," he said. "We're experiencing a moment in time where philanthropy is becoming an aspirational lifestyle choice."
- Women’s Wear Daily, 2006

Many see signs of significant change ahead, as super-rich philanthropists show the way for others joining the ranks of the wealthy. "Because of their collective prominence, they tend to make people aspire to be like them ... and to see philanthropy as 'a cool place to be,' " says Tom Watson, strategy officer for Changing Our World, a philanthropic consulting firm, and publisher of onPhilanthropy.
- Christian Science Monitor, 2006
